After discussions with schools, it’s clear that the DfE Digital Standards have not yet been prioritised, and there is little focus on them. We believe the latest updates will start to capture attention, especially with the significant changes to the Filtering and Monitoring standard. This standard is now classified as statutory, in line with Keeping Children Safe in Education guidance, and consistently references the DSL as the key figure responsible for compliance or consultation. Together with data protection, this is one of the standards schools should already be meeting due to current law and regulations. The update emphasises the importance of real-time monitoring and protection, requiring schools to be more proactive in safeguarding children. Overall, it ensures a more thorough and robust set of monitoring protocols.
